People ask me, “What’s one of the biggest mistakes you see after a car crash?” One of the things that people don’t realize is that insurance companies, defense lawyers, and even juries will hold against you the fact that you did not go by ambulance to the emergency room after a crash.

Don’t get me wrong, people understand that you’ve got adrenaline pumping and that can mask the pain. However, if later on you are claiming permanent injuries because of an accident, people expect to see some form of immediate care right after a crash, whether that be by going by ambulance or someone taking you to the hospital.

A car accident becomes a serious injury case when the crash causes injuries that significantly affect your health, work, mobility, daily life, or future medical needs. This may include hospitalization, surgery, fractures, traumatic brain injuries, spinal injuries, permanent pain, scarring, or any condition that keeps you from returning to life as it was before the crash. In those cases, the claim should be evaluated carefully, not treated like a routine insurance matter.

So, this is a bit of a tough one. Short answer is no. You don’t have to do either. However, I tell my clients, we don’t have anything to hide. So, if you want to go ahead and talk to the insurance adjuster, you can do that.

However, you do have to remember they are not on your side. They are looking out for the insurance company and for their insured, not looking out for your claim.
